DIY Fashion Project: Distressed Jeans

Give an old pair of jeans a second chance and get the the look of distressed jeans on a budget. This project is quite simple but needs a lot of patience and frequent re-washing until you get the look that is desired.

You will need:

An old pair of jeans
Sandpaper
Cardboard Knife
A cheese grater
Nail File
Blade
A piece of wood to go under
Q-tips or an eye shadow applicator
Bleach

As much as I love the look of suits it is always nice to have other stylish options for office wear/interviews.

The options presented below are stylish, professional and modern. I love how they added a corporate feel to a simple dress by just adding a blazer.

Some style tips from the video:

Clothes that are perfectly tailored to your body (regardless of the price) look expensive.
Flats and open-toed shoes are a big faux pas for interviews.
Accessorize and give life to an old dress by adding a belt.
If you don’t own a blazer, a cardigan can be used in its place.
Keep jewelry subtle and tasteful.

Spring/Summer 2010 Chanel Temporary Tattoos

Temporary tattoos were the “hit” accessories for the spring/summer 2010 collections. Chanel is offering a collection of prints for a limited time. The price tag?

$75 whopping dollars.

I guess compared to what Chanel charges, $75 is not a lot. But for temporary tattoos I can’t seem to justify spending that much.

Fifty-five exclusive temporary tattoos in all, originally hand-drawn by Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup, for the Spring-Summer 2010 Fashion Show in Paris. I like the idea and some of the prints are quite lovely. If I was considering getting a permanent tattoo this is a way to test out the waters before committing. I am just not sure if I want to pay for the entire set. It’s too bad you can’t just pick and choose what you like.

I love the milk maid look that was popular last season. It is simple, elegant and super easy to do. Just a couple of pins and tucks here and there. I found it easier to work with a smaller section of hair because it turned out neater. It helps if you have super thick hair especially if you want to create a thick braided band.

Faux Fur Chic

I love the look of fur but I don’t think that I can ever wear real fur. I love fuzzy animals too much and I don’t think that it is necessary to hunt animals down just for their fur alone. There are cultures/people out there that hunt, eat and use animal fur for survival purposes. This I am ok with.

Thank goodness for faux fur. I found this look on Garance Dore’s blog and I love how the colour of the model’s skin is enhanced by her beautiful fur collar. She looks so warm and cozy and gorgeous of course!

The monochromatic look is always so chic and will never go out of style.

Fashion Tip: How To Wear Belts

I am looking to add belts in my wardrobe. I have a couple of skinny belts but that’s about it. My concern with belts from a petite fashion perspective is that they tend to break up the silhouette. That being said I am thinking of getting a basic black belt (I’ll probably take it from T’s closet) and a wider belt with embellishments.

The video below shows a few options on how to wear belts. It basically explains how to take a basic shift dress to a new level by giving it a fresh look with a belt. I really like the leather and chain belt that they used and the cardigan/thin belt look is so cute!

Fashion tip: It is not always necessary to match your belt with your shoes.

Can anybody say wow? WOW! I absolutely love everything. The individual pieces and the way everything was put together. Everything screams city chic and wear me now! Maybe the latter is just in my head. Regardless, this collection rocks!

I am heading over to a store location to browse the items.

Casual Weekends

The white blazer and denim shorts combo is my favourite. The denim jumpsuit is quite cute too!

Dressy @ Work

The second and third looks are spot on and perfect for the office. I love the button detail on the pencil skirt. I like the violet and red combo and the green tank will look fabulous with a sharp, black blazer.

Date Night

I want the white dress. If it looks as good in the store this item will sell like hotcakes. I love the embellishment. The jacket and belt combo is so chic and the black and white outfit will look fantastic with flats or dressy sneakers. Pairing it with heels might be over-kill.

Sexy, earthy with a hint of somber and VERY pretty. I think that this line is quite sophisticated but mellow. When I look at a collection for spring I always like to see a palette of pretty colours (pastels—cliche I know but I associate pastels with spring) or amazing pieces in a few shades. At first glance, the collection did not blow me away (maybe because I was immersed in neutrals for months now), so to speak but I really like the versatile and wearable pieces that they came up. Toned down yet ferocious, just the way I like it!

Some of the pieces that I loved from the collection (I think that they did a great job putting the editorial together):

The boho chic (very last pic) is my favourite look. It reminds me of a more stylish version of Sophia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides.

Reading and researching about fashion is so much fun. Wish I could do it all day. I really like to peruse fashion, style and beauty blogs and see all the different perspectives. I recently came upon Umba Momba a site on fashion that covers fashion trends and celebrity style. There’s always something new to learn everyday and I love the inspiration that I get whenever I see the styles. Fashion for me is like art. I really admire people who have a great sense of style. Regardless of age, gender and financial situation if you are comfortable with your style and confident, you can rock anything. Seriously!

So while I was browsing I saw a pair of feathered Jimmy Choo stilettos that I really liked. Feather and adornments are going to be big. I saw a pair of Chanel heels that has the same concept. I really loved liked the lace and bow stilettos at Valentino so I am loving the whole feather look as well. It’s amazing how shoes can be adorned and turned into something unique. I think that I am going to find an old pair of black sandals and cover it with feathers, lace, and crystals. It’s hard to not go all out with the sparkle so I usually have to step back and analyze what I’ve come up with to avoid it from becoming tacky. When it comes to adornments I always believe less is more.

I think that this is going to be a fun project!

I Found My Dream Dress!

You all must know by now that I am a big sucker for pretty dresses and I found a Marciano dress that I must have. I am so tempted to buy it online but, a) I am not sure if it will fit (I am between a small and xs online) and I don’t want to go through the hassle of shipping it back b) with taxes and shipping the total comes close to $200 c) the dress is a not a need but a big WANT!

But I really, really, really want to buy this dress. It reminds me of Halston. I have a couple of summer functions that I can wear this dress to. So I’ve decided to give it one more day and then run to store, try it on and buy it if it looks fantastic on me.
