Featured Talent: Slina Asghar Make Up Artist
The talented make up pro Slina Asghar shares her favourite make up must-haves along with her recipe for a DIY skin mist.
Occupation: Pro Makeup Artist – Freelance. Companies worked for: Mac Cosmetics. Special Events: Runway shows (L’Oreal Fashion Week), Body painting, Special Effects, Bridal Parties (all ethnicities)
City: All of Canada
What is inside your make up bag?
Product 1 – OIL ABSORBING SHEETS
Anyone with Oily Skin needs these!!! It removes the oil without removing the makeup. Try MAC’s Blot Film or he cheapest brand that works the best is the Clean and Clear sheets found at any drug store.
Note: If you are out of oil absorbing sheets, use toilet sheet covers (believe it or not, it’s the same thing and works so well!)
Product 2 – BLOT POWDER

Many of us gals make the mistake of keeping a foundation powder or a pressed powder in our makeup bag to freshen up our makeup. Its great if you have perfect super model skin that can handle the “caked” look, but for everyday usage, you should always carry a blot powder as it is light on the skin and touches up your morning makeup without adding another layer of powder. Try MAC’s Blot powder. For $25.00, you are getting your money’s worth.
Product 3 – BUFFER BRUSH
Ok ladies, its time to throw out those filthy makeup pads! Not only are they bad for the product and terrible for your skin. Think about it, you are continuously rubbing the same makeup pad over the oils that secret out of your skin’s surface all day. By investing in high quality brushes, you are doing yourself a huge favour! Not only are they more hygienic (because you can wash them), you will also notice how much better your makeup will look. When buying from any Big Brands such as Bobbi Brown, Makeup Forever, MAC or Retail Stores such as Sephora, look for brushes made from Sythetic Hair, Pony Hair, Goat Hair and Squirrel hair. The one brush in my makeup bag is MAC’s 182 buffer brush also known as the infamous “kabuki”. It is a short brush used for all powder products. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no cheap way outta this one.
What are some of your favourite items and why?
EYE PAINT/EYE PRIMER (YAY!!! ☺)
My absolute FAVOURITE PRODUCT!!!! EVERYONE NEEDS THIS ITEM!! As a makeup artist, I am always critical of makeup. I cringe when I see someone wearing an eyeshadow that begins to collect in the folds of their eyelid (AKA, creasing). Putting on a base before applying your shadow will keep your eye shadow on the same way as it was when you leave the house. I guarantee it! MAC’s Paint Pots or Eye Paints will last you a very long time and are sold at a good price point. I haven’t come across very many cheaper brands carrying a product like this one but this is definitely a must have!!
MINERALIZED SKIN FINISH/FINISHING SPRAY
Do you ever put on a powder or a foundation over a dried out pimple? Did you ever notice that it makes your flaws stand out even more? A mineralized skin mist, is definitely an item everyone needs. This is a multi-use product that works best for people with dry skin. It is also used as finishing spray to set your makeup and can also be used to dilute a heavy foundation for those humid summer days. Try MAC’s Fix + or better yet, MAKE YOUR OWN:
Peel the skin off of a lemon and cut the peel into small strips. Boil a small pot of water, toss in two vitamin c tablets along with the peel. Let it cool and poor it in a mist bottle found at any dollar store. Store it in the fridge and mist over your face and body whenever needed!
Favourite budget beauty buy?

Definitely Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara. It’s the best of both worlds: Create a soft lash look or a heavy dark lash by adding an extra layer. My personal favorite way of applying mascara: Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, apply Great Lash, allow coat to fully dry, curl again and Voila! For a heavier lash, after second curl, apply another coat of the mascara. Not only does it work so well, it also doesn’t hurt the pocket so much when you dispose of it after 3 months.
